What this number means: Gross margin measures whether what you sell is profitable. Net margin measures whether the business is profitable once operating costs are paid. A healthy gross margin with a weak net margin points to a cost-structure problem, not a pricing one.
What the calculation assumes
- The result is before tax. No tax rate is applied.
- Depreciation, interest and owner draws are not modelled.
- The annual figure is simply monthly × 12: it does not account for seasonality.
- Profit is not cash — payment terms can make a profitable month hard to fund.

What is the difference between gross and net margin?
Gross margin subtracts only the cost of what you sell. Net margin also subtracts everything else: payroll, rent, marketing, overhead.
What margin should I aim for?
It depends entirely on the sector, and MTLPages does not publish an industry benchmark it cannot source. An accountant in your sector can give you a relevant reference point.
My profit is positive but I am short of cash. Why?
Profit is an accounting figure; cash is real. Customers paying at 60 days, inventory tying up money, or loan repayments create that gap. That is a conversation to have with an accountant.
