A community woven into the city’s history.
Montreal’s Jewish community is among the oldest in Canada, with major Eastern European immigration in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It centred historically on the Main (Saint-Laurent) and Mile End before moving to Snowdon, Côte-des-Neiges, Côte-Saint-Luc and Hampstead.
It has profoundly shaped Montreal’s literature, food, medicine and civic institutions.
A general historical and cultural overview, for information.
