English-speaking community
One of Montreal’s founding linguistic communities.
Overview
Montreal’s English-speaking community dates to the British régime after 1760 and grew through Scottish, Irish and Loyalist settlement. It built much of the city’s 19th-century commerce, universities and hospitals.
Today it is highly diverse, spanning the West Island, Westmount, NDG and downtown, and sustains English-language education, media, theatre and health care.
