Architects of 19th-century commercial Montreal.
Overview
Scottish merchants and financiers were central to the fur trade, banking and the railways, and helped found institutions such as McGill University and the Bank of Montreal. They were concentrated in the Golden Square Mile and Westmount.
Their legacy endures in the city’s architecture, philanthropy and the Black Watch regiment.
