Irish community
One of Montreal’s oldest communities.
Overview
The Irish settled heavily during the 1840s Famine migration, building neighbourhoods such as Griffintown, Pointe-Saint-Charles and Verdun. They helped shape the working-class city and its English-speaking Catholic institutions.
Montreal’s St. Patrick’s Day parade is among the oldest in North America, and the Black Rock commemorates the Famine dead.
